Life’s A Game Podcast 21 – Day One Un-Purchase

What if Run DMC were the protagonists in the new Devil May Cry? What wins in the battle between babies and tapas? Can everyone stop being racist? Answers to all these questions and several more await you in the first Life’s A Game of 2013!

If you’re not the kind of (wo)man about town who downloads directly from the website (by right-clicking that hyperlink about this very sentence), then maybe we can find something else for you…

Alright, enough of all that introduction nonsense, who’s actually in this thing?

Edward Price
Site creator and Podcast host; he hoped for an uncontroversial episode for once that didn’t require editing, and instead ended up involved in the most offensive podcast in the series’ history. If he edited most of this episode, it’d just be 20 minutes of talking to himself.

Richie Harkness
Creator of The 80s Movie Club. After his various excursions into midget-related rants, this year he’s seemingly moved on and now extolls the virtues of eating tapas over producing and raising children.

Okay, so now I know who’s talking, what are they talking about?

- Games we’ve been playing lately, including Hitman Absolution, Assassin’s Creed 3, DmC: Devil May Cry, Rise of the Guardians, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles, Mario Kart 7 and Saints Row the Third.

- This week’s first “With A Twist…” takes us to the underworld with “What if it was DmC: Devil May Cry, but…?”

- Breaking news occurs as we learn during recording that HMV are going into administration and we discuss none of the good times we’ve had with said store.

- We start the first of our 2012 awards, with Ric giving his “Shook the Pillars of Heaven” award to Sleeping Dogs, with Hitman Absolution and Mass Effect 3 as runners-up, whilst Ric becomes accidentally racist.

- Richie debates whether he should buy Far Cry 3.

- Keegan gives us his award – “The Most Fun You Can Have While Dying” and gives it to Tokyo Jungle. The rest of the gang nominate FTL: Faster Than Light, Worms Revolution and Hannah Montana: The Movie: The Game (even though it wasn’t released in 2012, trust us, we know), as well as why it’s okay for Ric to own the latter game, but not Richie.

- Meanwhile, Ed tries to plan Keegan’s wedding, with unsuccessful results.

- Richie delivers his award – “The X-Factor Audience” and attributes it to FIFA 13, with the rest of the cast nominating Doritos Crash Course (the DLC came out last year so it sort of counts) and Playstation All Stars Battle Royale. The discussion then turns to how weird the Xbox Live community can get and Richie explains why eating Tapas is better than raising a family.

- We bring back “With A Twist” as Ed pitches the cast a new idea for a game (“Fanboys Revenge“), prompting them to build on it with ideas of their own.

- With his game unsuccessfully pitched, Ed presents the final award – “Marmite Wank“, and is immediately caught out for stealing one of Keegan’s ideas and renaming it to something sillier. Regardless, he presses on and names Dishonored as the winner, with other members nominating Halo 4. The discussion then turns into lighting engines and Ed successfully sets Richie off on another rant.

- We end on our resolutions for the forthcoming gaming year and what games we’re looking forward to before saying goodbye via an impromptu Richie pitch called “Tiger Fuck Up” and a guitar solo.

Okay, so every time I predict when there’s going to be a new Life’s A Game, that doesn’t actually go as planned, so… if we say there’s likely to be one next month, that’s probably the most realistic bet.
So, see you soon!

Markuz Reid – Creator of Gaminglives.com and this podcast’s theme tune. His last appearance was in the excellent “Resident Elvis” episode, and in the time period since his hatred for Billy Mitchell seems to have grown into something weirdly sexual. In which we gabber furiously about…

- We start on a new tact as we talk about the games we’re most looking forward to, including Jet Set Radio, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Borderlands 2, prompting a short discussion of why the Gamecube (or in Richie’s case, the Dreamcast) was the greatest console ever.

- Ed tries to hijack a Borderlands 2 Bungee Jump event to propogate the Life’s A Game podcast in what will be the first (and probably) only time he attempts podcast dominance.

- The time-honoured tradition of what we’ve been playing lately comes back, featuring Borderlands 2, Tiny Troopers, Worms Revolution (and why Ed is the worst person at naming Worms ever), Curiosity: What’s Inside The Cube, Double Dragon: Neon, Duke Nukem Forever and Sleeping Dogs.

- The Wii U has a launch date and a price model, but despite all of Richie, Ric and Mark’s reasons the Wii U won’t win, Ed doesn’t care because the Super Marios in the HDs.

- Speaking of the higher definitions, Black Mesa has been released, which causes Ed to start discussing how he wouldn’t have minded in-game ads in Sleeping Dogs. You know, because he’s a mental.

- The in-game ads segues to Obama’s paid ads to assist himself in his re-election, which causes Ric and Richie to discuss arcade gaming. Seriously, tangents man.
Resi 6 got released early, and we discuss why you’d be silly to pay ridiculous amounts of money for the chance to get a game earlier than everyone else why

-Pitch Time! The gang come up with their own zombie-themed games to help stave off the inevitable slew of terrible undead-based titles.

Episode 19 will be available at some point in October! :D

Anniversary Discussions Include…

- Pitch Time(TM)! This time, the gang have to pitch a movie or game based on the Life’s A Game Podcast itself! Totally meta all up in this.
- Our games of Gamescom are discussed at length, including Injustice, Dishonoured and Train Simulator 2013 (no, really), how to be a real journalist at Gamescom, and that thing we do that is what we’ve been playing recently, like the newly released Sleeping Dogs.

- We laugh at Rockstar’s image distribution model for GTAV and the amount of people losing their collective shit over it, Richie calls out journalists who claimed GTA IV was the best ever, and Saints Row the Third is championed.

- Ed laments the continued delay of The Walking Dead episode 3, and Richie surprises us all with his opinions on the zombie point and click series. No, really.
- The cloud-streaming service Onlive is being dragged over a jagged cliff-face at the moment, prompting us to look over its launch and why Richie believes the console could never achieve true stardom.

- Minutes of our lives are spent trying to reword the Safety Dance so it’s about trains instead.

- The Vita’s ongoing lacklustre sales (selling 2 million units in six months, versus the widely publicised ‘badly selling’ 3DS’s 7 million units in that same timeframe) prompt extensive scrutiny over the console itself and the company’s business practices. Ric claims that the upcoming “Until Dawn” will be the Move’s saving grace, and this somehow results in yet another argument between Ed and Ric over Heavy Rain’s quality. No, I don’t know how either.

- Ric follows this up with a massive rant on the Vita, causing Richie to join in as well, only for Ed to decide he’s part of the cool kids club and starts slating Sony All-Stars Battle Royale.

- We pitch potential new franchises for Sony to invent to encourage sales of the Vita, and all it takes is Richie’s pitch to escalate the situation to a point where I’m legitimately sure we’ve either crossed a line, said something completely illegal, or both. Either way, wow.

- The podcast starts winding down, and that time is used to snipe at what we consider to be poor games journalistic practices, because we’re at that point where we’re clearly better than everyone else and have to prove it by sniping at people we consider beneath us.

- Then we end with our favourite things about us, because Ed fancies a bit of sycophancy seeing as it’s the one year anniversary of Life’s A Game in podcast form. With that backfiring hilariously, we stick with the recommendations of the show and prepare for the inevitable future.

Life’s A Game will be back soon. I keep trying to give a vague release window, but honestly your bet’s as good as ours by this point.
Back soon <3
